Monday saw Reeths-Puffer golf as part of an inventive first-time event - the East versus West Showdown - and the Rockets got to be part of the winning side.
The inaugural East/West Showdown, taking place at Muskegon Country Club, pitted six high-level teams from the east side of Michigan against six equally tough western schools. Rockets' coach Matt Pallett credited Mona Shores coach Joe Latz and Muskegon Country Club pro Stephany Pawlowski with the execution of the idea.
The tournament was scored in a Ryder Cup style, with each hole of each matchup worth one point. The west side came away victorious, 328.5-319.5. R-P's team score was 392, good for eighth place out of the 12 teams playing.
Sophia McCollum continued her excellent start to the season by scoring an 85, eighth place overall. She knocked in three birdies during her round and put up a one-over par 38 on the back nine holes.
Rowan Bluhm added a 93 for the Rockets, making seven pars.
"Sophia had a very strong day," Pallett said. "She didn’t get off to the best of starts ,
but really put a great stretch of golf together. Her mental toughness
keeps improving.
“Rowan put together a nice stretch
of golf today. She is yet to start firing on all cylinders. Her best
golf is yet to come.”
Olivia Ambler and Ella Voorhies each scored a 107 to close out the team score; for Voorhies, the score was the best of her young career.
