Whitehall and Reeths-Puffer battled for the top spot for 18 holes
at Wednesday's Whitehall Invitational, and in the end it came down to a
tiebreaker, with the host Vikings earning the win.
The two
local squads scored identical 373s, forcing the winner to be determined
by the tiebreaker - the better #5 score. That went to Whitehall on the
strength of Kelsie McClure's 111.
”Congrats to Coach (Bill)
Borgman and the Whitehall girls on the victory," R-P coach Matt Pallett
said. "It is shaping up to be an exciting city tournament this year.”
Montague finished in third place in the tournament, shooting a 400 to
edge North Muskegon and Big Rapids by three and four strokes
respectively.
Each of the three local squads placed two
individuals in the top 10. The Rockets' Rowan Bluhm was the top player,
tying for second place by shooting an 85, including a pair of birdies.
Grace McDowell led the Vikings with an 87, taking fifth place. Braylyn
Bultema of Montague tied R-P's Sophia McCollum for the #6 position, as
both players shot 89s. For Bultema, it was a personal best.
Montague's
Brynlee Kessler shot a 91, tying for eighth place, to earn her own
personal best, and Whitehall's Morgan Garcia had a 92 to earn the last
spot in the individual top 10.
Riley Shafer had a 93 and
Felicity Dingman carded a 101 to round out the Vikings' scoring. For
R-P, Olivia Ambler had a 94, including a birdie, and Ella Voorhies had a
105. Both scores were career varsity bests.
Montague's Cadence Fox and Marguerite O'Connell shot a 108 and a 112 respectively.
