Montague girls basketball defeats Newaygo in opener

Montague opened its season with a win over Newaygo Monday night, 61-49.
The Wildcats seized command of the game with a high-scoring second quarter, pouring in 18 points to the Lions' 11. Addison Pranger capped the outburst with a buzzer-beating three-pointer to end the first half. She went on to hit another buzzer-beating trey at the end of the third quarter, and she led the 'Cats with 19 points.
"I am very happy with how the girls played tonight," Montague coach Jess DeBruin said. "Newaygo is a scrappy team and we adjusted well to their trap defenses. It was a great team win tonight."
Braylyn Bultema added 16 points for Montague, and Adilynn Peterson and Amanda Cederquist each scored eight points.
