Pentwater boys fall to Marion in final seconds

The unbeaten streak for Pentwater’s boys basketball team ended at six games as the Falcons dropped a conference battle 57-55 to Marion, Wednesday, Dec. 18.

Poor shooting and rebounding put Pentwater into a 12 point hole as the first half came to a close. Marion capitalized, catching fire from beyond the arc to own a healthy advantage at halftime.

Pentwater turned up the intensity in the third quarter, causing havoc on defense and allowing that to lead into their offense. That effort allowed senior Jonny Arnouts to tie the game with a pair of fourth quarter free throws.

Unfortunately, Marion found a way to break the tie on a put back shot with just seconds remaining in regulation.

Leading the way for Pentwater was senior Mikey Carlson with a team-high 24 points to go along with seven rebounds. Arnouts added 12 points, five assists and five rebounds while Will Werkema-Grondsma had 12 points and four rebounds.

The Falcons fell to 6-1 overall with the loss and now sit at 2-1 in the West Michigan D League. Pentwater will get one final game in before the holiday break as they host conference-leading Bear Lake (5-0), Friday, Dec. 20 at 7:30 p.m.
