Montague boys basketball rises to challenge, defeats Newaygo

Montague exploded out of the gates for its best performance of the season so far Tuesday night at Newaygo, scoring a 71-42 victory.
It's been a rough go for the Wildcats (2-7), who are in the midst of a 10-game stretch that included seven road games and several clashes with top programs in the area. Coach Nick Thaler said he and his team had "difficult discussions" this week in which he told them in no uncertain terms things needed to improve.
"This is exactly the response I was looking for," Thaler said. "Great team win."
Cortland Schneider led the way for Montague with 21 points, and Cole Herremans (13) and Kellan Francis (11) each joined him in double figures in scoring, snapping a modest two-game win streak for the Lions.
