Montague placed ninth Saturday at the Division 3 regional tournament at Grand Rapids West Catholic, ending a strong season.
The Wildcats scored 695.82 points at the meet, just under 30 behind Portland, which took the fourth and last state qualifying position.
Montague was again solid in round three, with 294.1 points, but it wasn't enough to rally for the state meet after some early struggles, including 10 penalty points in round two to knock its score down to 191.02 points.
